Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes that if Tottenham Hotspur win the league, it would be the best performance from a manager in the history of the competition, Daily Mail reports.
Spurs went to the Etihad and beat Manchester City 2-1 on Sunday, with birthday boy Christian Eriksen scoring a late winner to push the Lilywhites just two points off league leaders Leicester City.
And former Reds defender Carragher had nothing but goods words for the North London club, with the Englishman lavishing praise on their manager who has taken his side to seven wins on the trot in all competitions.
He said on Sky Sports: “We’ve spoken about the philosophy he’s brought on the pitch – with the high pressing game – but it’s almost important what he’s been doing off the pitch.
“Don’t forget the squad he inherited had a lot of bad apples he had to get rid of there. If Leicester don’t win the league, and it Tottenham do, that could be the biggest story in Premier League history, in terms of what they’ve spent.
“When you think of previous title winners, you could say it was to be expected. But you wouldn’t expect that from Tottenham. It would be the best managerial performance in Premier League history if Tottenham go on and win the league.’
“They were brilliant. I said before the game that they were the best team I’ve seen this season. Whenever I see them, I’m always impressed. Mousa Dembele got man of the match – he was like Yaya Toure from four or five years ago at times today, but it wasn’t easy to pick one… every player was an eight out of ten.”
After a rather drab first half, the game turned on its head when Spurs were given a soft penalty after Danny Rose’s cross hit Raheem Sterling’s arm just on the edge of the box.
Harry Kane made no mistake with the spot kick, sending Joe Hart the wrong way but Pochettino’s men were pegged back by a brilliant finish from substitute Kelechi Iheanacho.
But with almost his first touch, substitute Erik Lamela ran at the City defence and supplied a perfect pass to Eriksen, who slide the ball pass Hart to end the game in Spurs’ favour.
