Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has stated that his side will not sign a new striker in January, after a proposed move for Sochaux’s Modibo Maiga fell through.
The Tyneside club have been tracking the Ligue 1 forward for some time, and after agreeing a fee with the French club looked to be on the verge of signing him; however Maiga failed a medical in the lead up to the deal being completed.
After missing out on Maiga, Pardew has stated that a new frontman will most likely not be added when the transfer window reopens in the new year.
“I don’t think we’ll be bringing a striker in in this window after the collapse of Maiga, which we put a lot of work into,” he told a press conference on Sky Sports.
“I think, as far as we’re concerned, we’ll go with what we’ve got.
“You have to pay over the odds in this window, everybody does, and you have to accept that if you’re going to invest in this window. But we won’t be in terms of a striker,” he stated.
Newcastle have relied on Demba Ba for goals this season, and Pardew knows that the Senegal international will be missed when he departs for the Afircan Cup of Nations in January.
“It will be a loss because he’s in great form, of course.
“We accepted that was going to happen when we signed him, that the Africa Nations Cup was coming up. We just get on with it,” he commented.
